2019
In 2019, the world saw significant progress in terms of gender equality and women’s rights. The #MeToo movement continued to gain momentum, leading to the downfall of powerful men who had been accused of sexual harassment and assault. This brought attention to the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and sparked important conversations about consent and accountability. Additionally, more women were elected to positions of power around the world, including the first female prime minister in Belgium and the first female president in Slovakia. These victories demonstrate a growing recognition of the importance of diverse perspectives and the need for women’s voices to be heard in decision-making processes.
However, there is still a long way to go in achieving true gender equality. In 2019, the gender pay gap remained a persistent issue, with women still earning less than men for the same work in most countries. Women’s reproductive rights were also under attack, with several countries enacting restrictive laws and policies, limiting access to safe and legal abortion. Furthermore, women and girls continued to face systemic discrimination and violence, particularly those from marginalized communities. As we move into the new decade, it is crucial that we continue to push for progress and address these ongoing challenges in the fight for gender equality.
